Spring Selections: Caulfield Cup Day

The Caulfield Cup is one of the biggest races in the country and our experts cast their eyes over the field for this week's Group 1 feature and give us their best bet for the big day.

Thanks again to Racing.com's Adam McGrath and James Jordan, the voice of South Australian racing Terry McAuliffe and The Advertiser's Lincoln Moore and Ben Scadden.

Group 1 Caulfield Cup

Adam McGrath: Bonneval - Despite the wide I'm happy to stick with Bonneval. Her recent record prior to last start is exceptional and she had excuses returning lame. She's 2 from 2 at the distance and she has Kerrin McEvoy on board who's in career best form. With a solid tempo on through the early stages, watch her flashing down the outside late.

James Jordan: Harlem - Had the luxury of being able to have a maintenance run last start courtesy of already having his place in the Caulfield Cup sewn up. He carries no weight and should get a suck run from an inside gate. He'll do each-way.

Terry McAuliffe: Johannes Vermeer - Hard not to be taken by his second last Saturday in the Caulfield Stakes. From one of the best stables in World Racing, he has drawn a beautiful gate in two, and this son of Galileo is deserved of Cup favouritism.

Lincoln Moore: Humidor - Hard not to be impressed with his Makybe Diva victory and nothing wrong with his effort behind Winx last time which should have him primed for this.

Ben Scadden: Humidor - His Turnbull Stakes run look moderate on face value but reckon that was simply a tune-up for this race. He'll be very strong when it counts, like most Weir runners.

Best of the Day

Adam McGrath: Samovare (Race 5) Former West Australian mare has shown her class in Melbourne this preparation. She hasn't had much luck with barriers or tempo of races as was the case again last start. Once again she has drawn wide, but I'm hoping for some Ollie magic when it counts. If she can find a spot and settle early, then I think she's the best horse in the race.

James Jordan: Our Crown Mistress (Race 1) Super tough filly who should go straight to the front and dictate terms in this. Extra distance suits and expecting the rail to be the best ground early on.

Terry McAuliffe: Wheel Leisure (Race 5) From the in form Archie Alexander yard, this mare is unbeaten with two wins this prep, including a first up win over stablemate Lord Fandango, which has won twice since and lines up in the Caulfield Cup later on the day.

Lincoln Moore: Conchita (Race 10)

Ben Scadden: Foxplay (Race 9) She was a close second to Winx over this trip three starts back. She's drawn perfectly and gets man of the moment, Kerrin McEvoy. That'll do me.
