Strong Field to Tackle Sunday’s Squatter’s Cup

One of the strongest fields in recent years will contest Sunday’s Squatter’s Cup at Port Augusta. There will be plenty of winning chances in the capacity field, with horses from all around the state set to lineup in the final hit-out before July’s City of Port Augusta Cup.

Tony McEvoy will saddle up his first runner at Port Augusta since 2015 when Table of Wisdom takes his place in the Squatter’s Cup field. The four-year-old has won two from four this preparation and has looked better each time he’s stepped out over a longer distance. He’ll be ridden by apprentice Anna Jordsjo who has been in sensational form of late with four city winners in the last three weeks.

Fellow apprentice Alfred Chan has had plenty of success at Port Augusta this year, leading the way with five winners from twenty rides. He’ll partner Simon Drewitt’s Lady Conquistador who was a winner at the track two starts back before running second in his last start with Chan in the saddle.

It’s Humphrey is undefeated in two starts at the track this year and was the runner-up in this race last year. The five-year-old has been on fire since joining the Trevor Trenowden stable with four wins from five starts including wins in the Penong and Streaky Bay Cups. The gelding loves the dirt tracks and will be in the race for a long way with the talented Ryusei Sakai in the saddle. Sakai has ridden It’s Humphrey in each of his four wins since joining Trenowden.

Sairyn Fawke claimed the Squatter’s Cup last year on It’s Fred and will have a chance to claim a second with Grant Kluske’s Fantastic Magic. The Strathalbyn Cup winner has won second up but no doubt will be looking ahead to July’s Port Augusta Cup when he can get out to over 2000 m.

No one has trained more winners at Port Augusta this season than Dennis McMahon with five wins and he’ll saddle up last start winner Letsava Win. The five-year-old has a sensational record at the track with three wins and two seconds from seven starts. Apprentice Raquel Clark will take the ride on Sunday.

Jockey’s Ryan Hurdle and Justin Potter have both recorded four wins this year at Port Augusta and their experience at the track will be invaluable to their mounts. Hurdle will ride Millicent Cup winner Chestnut Charlie while Potter will ride Vintage Grove who is having his first start for trainer Ryan Dawson after transferring from the Richard Jolly stable.

The Nonning Pastoral Co. Squatter’s Cup will be run at Race 7 on Sunday at 4.10pm.
