Media Release: Millions earmarked for racing projects across the state

Minister for Racing Corey Wingard has approved the release of millions of dollars in funding for the redevelopment of infrastructure at South Australian racing clubs.

Earlier this year, the State Government announced a $24 million stimulus package for the industry to improve its performance and viability.

Following several submissions from Thoroughbred Racing SA (TRSA) Minister Wingard has given the go ahead for $2.5 million to be spent on 10 different projects.

Included in the spend is $505,000 for an uphill sand training track at Murray Bridge, a $408,000 equine pool at Gawler and a $105,000 racing surface refurbishment at Port Augusta.

Morphettville will get new on-course stables thanks to $500,000 from the Government and an additional $1.7 million from the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC).

“The State Government is committed to ensuring that benefits from the stimulus package be felt across all levels of the industry – from grassroots right through to the elite level,” Minister Wingard said.

“The quality of submissions for this release of funds was excellent and I look forward to seeing the results.”

TRSA Chair Frances Nelson QC said the Government’s commitment was welcome news for the entire thoroughbred racing industry.

“Investing in the infrastructure that supports our participants is crucial to the vitality and viability of the thoroughbred racing industry,” Ms Nelson said.

“We are delighted to have this first stage of projects approved by the Minister and will be working closely with the clubs as the projects progress.”

It’s anticipated that the $2.2 million investment at Morphettville will deliver up to 80 new horse boxes at the south-western corner of the course.

“This announcement gives our industry a much-needed injection of confidence,” said SAJC CEO Grant Mayer.

“We’d like to thank TRSA for backing our initiative and the Minister for seeing the growth opportunities in a project that we believe will not only support local trainers but also help us attract interstate business,” Mr Mayer said.
