Industry Release: Port Adelaide Cup exemption to boost SA Autumn Racing Carnival

In a boost for the 2020 South Australian Autumn Racing Carnival the winner of the time-honoured Dominant Port Adelaide Cup if age eligible, will be granted ballot exempt status into Flemington’s autumn staying feature the Andrew Ramsden Stakes. In order to facilitate this exciting initiative, the Port Adelaide Cup will be brought forward to Saturday 2 May 2020 at Morphettville. The Port Adelaide Cup is run over 2500M with prizemoney of $100,000 and holds listed status.

The $400,000 Andrew Ramsden Stakes, restricted to Three, Four and Five year-olds under Weight-For-Age conditions will be conducted on Saturday 16 May 2020 at Flemington over 2800M with the winner receiving ballot exemption into the 2020 Lexus Melbourne Cup. The 2019 Andrew Ramsden Stakes saw a thrilling finish with up and coming stayer Steel Prince narrowly holding off 2019 TAB Adelaide Cup winner Surprise Baby. In a major positive for the race, Steel Prince went on to finish Ninth in the 2019 Melbourne Cup with Surprise Baby finishing a close up Fifth.

Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Executive General Manager Racing Leigh Jordan stated that it is fantastic for Victoria and South Australia to work together to increase  the appeal of both the Port Adelaide Cup and the Andrew Ramsden Stakes. Thoroughbred Racing South Australia Chief Executive Officer Jim Watters noted the initiative was a significant boost for staying races and TRSA welcomed the partnership with the VRC.
