Breeders’ Stakes boast strong field of potential stars

A strong field of potential stars will launch Saturday’s Morphettville program in the $120,000 Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes over 1200m.

The black-type event – race 1 on the program – will be one of two on the main Morphettville track, along with race 9.

Likely favourite is Anthony Freedman-trained Charm School, to be ridden by Paul Gatt. Charm School was impressive at his only start, winning a Sandown midweeker over 1200m. The Redoute’s Choice filly really hit top gear inside the final 100m, and actually won softly in the end, despite the relatively narrow winning margin.

Charm School will have plenty of stiff competition on Saturday though, via a long list of already well-performed two-year-olds.

James Cummings’ Jerle brings fresh form to the race, having finished runner-up – beaten four lengths – behind the impressive Doubtland in the Group 3, $200,000 Kindergarten Stakes over 1100m on a heavy Randwick track on April 4.

The in-form Gordon Richards stable has Crown Mint engaged for Saturday’s race. Crown Mint overcame a wide run throughout to win at Sandown over 1300m on March 18, after a debut second at Morphettville earlier that month.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy yard has a strong hand in the event, headed by Bribery, who ran an excellent third in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup day. The form has since been franked by runner-up Glenfiddich, who was seen at Randwick last Saturday finishing second to King’s Legacy in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes. Bribery’s stablemate Star Uma is also a live chance, following a brave second to Grand Slam over 1250m at Morphettville Parks on April 11, when wide throughout.

In addition, the McEvoy stable has Fastnet Rock filly Violinist having her first start.

Mick Huxtable’s last-start Dequetteville Stakes winner Ecumenical is also among the leading hopes, along with Leon and Troy Corstens’ Ranting and even the Leon Macdonald-Andrew Gluyas runner Ichibansan, who was a little unlucky behind Grand Slam.

The Macdonald-Gluyas stable trained the 2017 Breeders’ Stakes winner, Tequila Time, while Ichibansan’s rider, Jason Holder, is going for his third Breeders’ Stakes success. One of Holder’s previous winners of note was Gold Guru, prepared by Leon Macdonald, who in addition to Tequila Time, prepared three winners of this race on his own.
