Gordon’s focus down south with Bold Star and Garner

MORPHETTVILLE trainer Gordon Richards might be in the middle of the media rounds in Sydney with star sprinter Gytrash but his focus will be down south at Caulfield on Saturday.

Richards will saddle-up Gytrash’s smart stablemates Bold Star and Garner in the $160,000 Group 3 The Heath (1100m), a race that will ultimately decide which path the pair take as the Melbourne Spring Carnival kicks into gear.

“I was going to separate them this weekend, but it was going to be a tough because the race at the Valley next week is weight-for-age,” Richards.

“After they race Saturday, we’ll get a good idea of who goes in what direction.

“They’ll both come home and one may run in the Wylie, but I’ll be guided by how they go this weekend.

“You’d like them to be running in the good races like the Moir Stakes but we’ll let them dictate that.”

Both Bold Star and Garner galloped alongside Gytrash at Morphettville between races on Spring Stakes day and Richards, who is staying in Sydney with his Everest slot holder, said all the feedback from his staff back home was positive.

“They had a good gallop on Tuesday together and there wasn’t a breath between them,” Richards said.

“All reports are both are heading to Melbourne in really good order.”

Craig Williams will ride Bold Star with Dwayne Dunn again aboard Garner and Richards said it was nice have the top jockeys chasing rides at this time of the year

“It’s good when you don’t have to ring a jockey,” Richards said.

Richards also nominated promising youngster Crown Mint for the $160,000 Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield but opted to stay in Adelaide.

“I didn’t want to throw him in the deep end just yet,” Richards said.

“If you think he’d be good enough to win the McNeil then he’d be a good thing in that race in Adelaide.

“The blinkers will help him concentrate and I think he should run well.”

And he said the 2kg claim for in-form apprentice Jessica Eaton will hold the horse in good stead for his return.

“Weight certainly won’t be an issue,” he said.
