In appreciation of our jockeys

As a key figure in the SA branch of the Australian Jockeys’ Association, Eran Boyd found some extra meaning in last Saturday’s races at Morphettville.

As well as steering Waikato Express and Pindaric home earlier in the day, Boyd – with four rides – was part of a sensational day of racing that saw the culmination of the National Jockeys’ Trust (NJT) Series Final.

“The Jockeys’ Trust is there to benefit all of us (jockeys),” Boyd said.

“Whether it’s race falls and injuries, or even just ongoing support, we’re really lucky to have the support of the National Jockeys’ Trust.”

Instant Celebrity stormed home in race nine, running down Viduka in the final stages.

As a result, Instant Celebrity’s jockey, Jake Toeroek, took home a $500 Markey Saddlery voucher, while Viduka’s strapper, Mat Harvey, claimed $100 for turning out the best horse in the parade ring.

With hundreds of race falls annually and significant injuries occurring as a result, the NJT exists to provide jockeys and their families with financial and non-financial support.

Kayla Crowther claimed $2000 after being awarded the leading jockey for the series. Crowther edged out Barend Vorster, Jess Eaton and Shayne Cahill for the award. Crowther picked up 23 points during the 2020 NJT Series, while Vorster, Eaton and Cahill all finished on 22 points.

For the trainers, Phillip Stokes also went home $2000 richer after claiming the leading trainer award. Stokes had 23 points in the 2020 NJT Series, while runner-up Grant Young had 20.
